Streptomyces is a genus of Gram-positive bacteria renowned for its significant role in the discovery and production of antibiotics. The use of Streptomyces species in treating infections is strongly supported by scientific evidence. Many of the most important antibiotics in clinical use, such as streptomycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and erythromycin, were originally isolated from Streptomyces species. Streptomycin, discovered in 1943 from Streptomyces griseus, was the first antibiotic effective against tuberculosis and a range of other bacterial infections. Since then, Streptomyces-derived antibiotics have become critical tools in modern medicine for fighting bacterial infections.
