Streptococcus thermophilus is a probiotic bacterium commonly used in the fermentation of dairy products like yogurt and cheese. Its use in supporting or treating infections is based on emerging scientific evidence, though not yet robust or definitive. S. thermophilus is thought to contribute to the maintenance of a healthy gut microbiota, which plays a role in immune system regulation and defense against pathogenic organisms. Some studies suggest that S. thermophilus, often in combination with other probiotics such as Lactobacillus species, may help reduce the incidence or severity of certain infections, particularly gastrointestinal infections like antibiotic-associated diarrhea or Clostridioides difficile infection. The proposed mechanisms include competition with pathogenic microbes, production of antimicrobial substances, and enhancement of mucosal barrier function.
However, direct evidence for S. thermophilus alone in the treatment or prevention of infections is limited. Most clinical trials involve multi-strain probiotic formulations, making it difficult to isolate the effect of S. thermophilus. There is some indication from in vitro and animal studies that it can inhibit pathogen growth, but large-scale, high-quality human trials are lacking. Thus, while the use of S. thermophilus for infection has a scientific rationale and some supportive data, the evidence base is still considered modest (rated 2 out of 5), and it is not universally recommended as a standalone therapy for infection.
