Evidence supporting the use of: Mastic
For the health condition: Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Mastic, a resin obtained from the Pistacia lentiscus tree, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions. Historically, mastic has been used for its antimicrobial properties in the treatment of infections, especially those affecting the gastrointestinal tract, mouth, and skin. Ancient Greek and Ottoman medical texts reference its application as a remedy for various ailments, including infections and wounds.
Modern scientific studies offer some support for these traditional uses. In vitro research has demonstrated that mastic exhibits antibacterial activity against certain pathogens, such as Helicobacter pylori, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus mutans. Some small clinical studies have also suggested that mastic gum may help reduce H. pylori infection in the stomach, which is associated with gastritis and peptic ulcers. However, the quality and size of these clinical trials are limited, and results are not always consistent.
Overall, while traditional use of mastic for infection is well documented, robust scientific validation is modest and largely limited to laboratory studies and small clinical trials. Mastic is not considered a primary or evidence-based treatment for infections in modern clinical practice.
