Lauric acid is a medium-chain fatty acid found primarily in coconut oil and palm kernel oil. Its use in supporting or treating infections is primarily based on its demonstrated antimicrobial properties in laboratory studies. Lauric acid is converted in the body to monolaurin, a compound that has shown the ability to disrupt the lipid membranes of certain bacteria, viruses, and fungi, making them less able to infect host cells. In vitro (test tube) studies have shown that lauric acid and monolaurin are effective against pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, and some enveloped viruses, including influenza and HIV. However, evidence in humans is limited. Most of the available research comes from cell culture or animal models, and there are very few well-controlled clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of lauric acid supplementation for treating infections in people. Traditional use of coconut oil for health and as a food preservative in various cultures does exist, but the specific targeting of lauric acid for infection is a relatively recent, science-driven phenomenon. In summary, while laboratory data is promising, clinical support for the use of lauric acid to treat or prevent infections in humans is modest and more research is needed to determine optimal dosing, safety, and efficacy.
