Glucan peptides, particularly beta-glucans derived from yeast, fungi, or oats, have been studied for their immunomodulatory properties, which are relevant to infection support and management. Beta-glucans are known to stimulate the activity of macrophages, neutrophils, and natural killer (NK) cells—key players in the innate immune response. Several preclinical and clinical studies have shown that beta-glucans can enhance host resistance to a variety of bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens. For example, a 2019 systematic review in the journal Molecules highlights evidence that beta-glucan supplementation can reduce the incidence and duration of upper respiratory tract infections, especially in individuals under physical or psychological stress. Further, small clinical trials have suggested reduced infection rates and improved immune parameters in populations such as athletes and the elderly.
However, while the mechanistic rationale and early-stage clinical evidence are promising, the overall quality and size of human trials are limited. Most studies use beta-glucan as a general immune support rather than a direct treatment for established infection. The evidence base is stronger for prevention or reduction of infection risk rather than treatment. Also, "glucan peptides" is a broader term, and much of the evidence specifically pertains to purified beta-glucans, not necessarily all glucan-peptide complexes. Thus, the scientific support is moderate (rated 3), and further large, well-controlled studies are needed to clarify efficacy and optimal formulations.
