Geranial, also known as citral A, is a monoterpene aldehyde and a major component of lemongrass oil and other citrus-scented essential oils. Traditionally, these essential oils have been used in folk medicine for their presumed antimicrobial and antiseptic properties, particularly in regions where lemongrass is native. The use of geranial-containing oils for minor infections, wound cleaning, and even as a preservative has a long cultural history, especially in parts of Asia and South America.

Scientific studies have demonstrated that geranial exhibits some in vitro antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria and fungi. However, most of these studies are preliminary, conducted in laboratory settings, and do not address safety or efficacy in humans. The concentrations required to achieve antimicrobial effects in vitro are often much higher than what would be safely achievable in vivo. There is a lack of robust clinical evidence supporting the use of geranial as a therapeutic agent for infections in humans. Therefore, while traditional use is well documented, scientific validation remains limited, and the evidence supporting its use for infection is weak overall.
