Commiphora wightii, commonly known as guggul, has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, where it is employed for a variety of ailments, including infections. Traditional texts often describe guggul as possessing "antimicrobial" or "wound-healing" properties, and it has been incorporated into topical preparations for skin infections, ulcers, and inflammatory conditions. However, while these uses are well documented in ethnomedicinal literature, the direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy against infections in humans is very limited. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts of Commiphora wightii possess mild antibacterial and antifungal activity, but these findings have not been robustly translated into clinical practice or validated in human trials. The primary active constituents, guggulsterones, are mostly studied for their anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering effects rather than antimicrobial action. Thus, while traditional use exists, contemporary scientific validation for infection-related indications is weak, and the overall evidence rating for its use in treating or supporting infection is low.
