Evidence supporting the use of: Bisabolene
For the health condition: Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bisabolene is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene found in various plants, especially in the essential oils of chamomile and other aromatic herbs. The primary justification for its use in supporting or treating infections is scientific, although the evidence is still preliminary and mostly limited to in vitro (laboratory) studies. Several studies have demonstrated that bisabolene and its derivatives possess antimicrobial activity against a range of bacteria and fungi. For example, research has shown that α-bisabolene exhibits activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans, among other pathogens. The mechanism is believed to involve disruption of microbial cell membranes, leading to cell death.
However, it is important to note that most of these findings are from cell-based assays, and there is a lack of robust clinical trials or in vivo studies to confirm efficacy and safety in humans. As a result, while the compound shows promise as an antimicrobial agent, its use for treating infections is not yet supported by high-quality clinical evidence. Therefore, the strength of evidence is rated as 2 out of 5, reflecting laboratory validation with limited translation to practical or clinical application so far.
