Beta-glucan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in the cell walls of cereals (like oats and barley), yeast, fungi, and some bacteria. Its use to support or treat infections has been scientifically investigated, particularly because of its immunomodulatory properties. Beta-glucans are known to stimulate the activity of macrophages, neutrophils, and natural killer cells, which play key roles in the body’s defense against pathogens. Preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) have demonstrated that beta-glucans can enhance the immune response, leading to improved resistance against bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.
Some human clinical studies have shown that beta-glucan supplementation may reduce the incidence or duration of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), particularly in individuals under physical or psychological stress. For example, randomized controlled trials in athletes and individuals with increased infection risk have reported modest decreases in the frequency of cold episodes and improvements in immune markers. However, results across studies are mixed, with some trials showing little to no impact. There is less robust evidence for its use in serious or systemic infections, and beta-glucans are generally considered as adjuncts to conventional therapy rather than standalone treatments.
In summary, scientific evidence supports the immunomodulatory and anti-infective potential of beta-glucan, particularly for mild or upper respiratory infections, but more high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are needed to establish definitive efficacy and optimal dosing guidelines.
