Aster tataricus, known as "Zi Wan" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has long been used in East Asian herbal practices, particularly for respiratory infections such as coughs, bronchitis, and other lung-related ailments. Historical texts, including the Shennong Bencao Jing (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica), classify Aster tataricus as an herb that expels phlegm and relieves cough, suggesting its use is deeply rooted in tradition. Traditional formulations often combine Zi Wan with other herbs to support lung function and address symptoms of infection, such as productive cough and inflammation of the airways.

Modern scientific research on Aster tataricus is limited but does exist. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that extracts of the root may possess antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. For instance, certain saponins, flavonoids, and polysaccharides isolated from Aster tataricus have demonstrated inhibitory effects against bacteria commonly associated with respiratory infections, and anti-inflammatory actions that could theoretically help with infection symptoms. However, these findings are preliminary and have not been substantiated by rigorous clinical trials in humans. Therefore, the primary justification for using Aster tataricus to support or treat infections remains traditional, with a moderate level of supporting evidence from laboratory studies but insufficient clinical validation.
