Aloe, particularly Aloe vera, has a long history of traditional use for treating various types of infections, especially skin infections and wounds. Ancient civilizations, such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Chinese, used Aloe for its supposed healing, soothing, and antimicrobial properties. The gel from the Aloe leaf has been applied topically to burns, cuts, and other minor wounds, with the belief that it helps to prevent infection and promote healing. Some traditional medicine systems have also used Aloe extracts internally for gastrointestinal infections, although this practice is less common due to potential toxicity concerns. Scientific evidence for Aloe's antimicrobial effects is limited and mostly comes from laboratory (in vitro) studies. These studies have shown that Aloe vera gel and extracts can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, viruses, and fungi in test tubes. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans that confirm these effects translate to effective infection treatment or prevention in real-world scenarios. While Aloe's soothing and anti-inflammatory properties may help with wound healing, its direct role in treating infections is not well established by modern science. Therefore, Aloe's use for infection is primarily justified by traditional use rather than strong scientific validation.
