Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent that is widely used to relieve symptoms of indigestion, particularly those associated with excessive gas, such as bloating, discomfort, and pressure in the stomach or intestines. Its primary mechanism of action is to reduce the surface tension of gas bubbles, causing them to coalesce and be more easily eliminated from the gastrointestinal tract. Clinical studies have shown that simethicone is effective in reducing symptoms related to gas, but evidence supporting its benefit for general indigestion is less robust. Indigestion, or dyspepsia, encompasses a variety of symptoms, and while simethicone may help when gas is a significant component, it does not address other causes of indigestion such as acid reflux or motility disorders. Systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials have generally found simethicone to be safe and somewhat effective for gas-related discomfort, but results are mixed regarding its overall efficacy for all forms of indigestion. Major guidelines, such as those from the American College of Gastroenterology, recognize simethicone as an option for gas symptoms but do not recommend it as a primary treatment for indigestion in general.
