Chloride, most commonly encountered in the form of sodium chloride (table salt) or as part of hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach, plays an essential physiological role in digestion. Scientifically, chloride ions are a critical component of gastric juice, combining with hydrogen ions secreted by parietal cells to form hydrochloric acid. HCl creates the highly acidic environment necessary for the activation of pepsinogen to pepsin, which is required for protein digestion. It also helps in killing ingested pathogens and facilitating the absorption of certain nutrients, such as vitamin B12 and iron.

Indigestion, or dyspepsia, can sometimes be associated with low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria), leading to impaired digestion and gastrointestinal discomfort. In these cases, supplemental chloride (often as betaine hydrochloride or potassium chloride in supplements) is sometimes used to increase gastric acidity. Some studies and clinical observations suggest that increasing chloride intake can help restore proper stomach acidity and improve symptoms of indigestion in patients with documented low stomach acid. However, the quality of evidence is moderate, with a lack of large-scale randomized controlled trials. The use of chloride for indigestion is therefore supported by physiological rationale and some clinical evidence, but more research is needed to establish its efficacy in the general population.
