Carvone is a monoterpene found in essential oils of plants such as caraway and spearmint. Its use for indigestion (dyspepsia) is supported by some scientific evidence, though the quality and quantity of studies are limited. In clinical and pharmacological research, caraway oil (which is rich in carvone) has been shown to have spasmolytic (muscle-relaxing) effects on the gastrointestinal tract. Several studies, including randomized controlled trials, have investigated the combination of caraway oil and peppermint oil for the treatment of functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome. Results suggest that this combination can reduce symptoms such as bloating, discomfort, and pain, likely due to its relaxing effect on smooth muscles and possible reduction of gas formation. However, specific studies investigating pure carvone, rather than caraway oil as a whole, are scarce. The mechanism by which carvone may help is thought to involve calcium channel modulation and smooth muscle relaxation. While traditional herbal medicine has long used caraway preparations for digestive complaints, the direct scientific evidence for carvone’s efficacy is moderate and often confounded by the use of whole oils or combinations with other active ingredients. Therefore, while there is some scientific basis for its use, more high-quality, carvone-specific clinical trials are needed.
