Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, where it is valued for its calming, adaptogenic, and neuroprotective properties. In Ayurveda, Jatamansi is often recommended to help manage stress, anxiety, and sleep disturbances—conditions thought to be regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, with the hypothalamus playing a central role. However, direct references to Jatamansi's support of the "hypothalamus" as an isolated body system are not found in traditional texts, as the understanding of brain anatomy was different in historical contexts. Instead, its use is inferred through its effects on mind, mood, and stress response, which are now understood to involve hypothalamic regulation.
Scientific studies have begun to investigate the neuroprotective and anxiolytic effects of Jatamansi extracts, focusing on neurotransmitter modulation and anti-oxidative properties in animal models. Some research indicates potential benefits for cognitive function and stress adaptation, which could involve hypothalamic pathways. However, direct, high-quality clinical studies specifically linking Jatamansi to hypothalamic function in humans are lacking. As such, the primary justification for its use in supporting hypothalamic function is traditional, with early preclinical scientific support suggesting possible mechanisms but not providing strong validation.
