Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) is a plant native to South America, traditionally used as a sweetener. Its use to support or treat hypertension is supported by a modest but growing body of scientific evidence. Several animal and human studies suggest that certain glycosides in stevia, particularly stevioside, may have blood pressure-lowering effects. Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that stevioside, when taken in relatively high doses, can reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in individuals with mild to moderate hypertension. For example, a study published in the journal Clinical Therapeutics (2003) found that oral stevioside (250 mg three times daily) significantly lowered blood pressure in hypertensive patients over a two-year period, without notable adverse effects.
Mechanistically, stevia glycosides are believed to promote vasodilation through calcium channel blockade and diuretic effects. However, results from human trials are mixed, and some studies have not observed significant antihypertensive effects, especially at lower doses or in normotensive subjects. Major health organizations have not yet endorsed stevia as an antihypertensive agent, and its primary approved use remains as a non-caloric sweetener. In summary, while there is scientific evidence supporting stevia’s potential to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive individuals, the evidence is moderate and not yet definitive, warranting further research to confirm efficacy and establish safe dosing guidelines.
