Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is valued as an adaptogen and tonic for supporting liver health, stress resilience, and overall vitality. Within TCM, Schisandra is sometimes used in herbal formulas aimed at supporting cardiovascular health, including the management of hypertension (high blood pressure). However, the traditional rationale is largely based on its perceived ability to "calm the spirit," "nourish the kidneys," and "constrain the essence," rather than direct antihypertensive action as understood in modern medicine.
Scientific evidence directly supporting Schisandra's effectiveness in treating hypertension is limited. Some preclinical studies (mostly in animal models) suggest that Schisandra extracts may have mild effects on blood pressure, possibly due to antioxidant properties, vasodilation, and modulation of the renin-angiotensin system. However, well-controlled human clinical trials are lacking, and the data are insufficient to draw firm conclusions about its antihypertensive efficacy. As such, while traditional use exists, scientific validation for this specific indication is weak, and Schisandra should not be considered a primary therapy for hypertension based on current evidence.
