Evidence supporting the use of: Inositol-stabilized arginine silicate
For the health condition: Hypertension
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Inositol-stabilized arginine silicate (often marketed as Nitrosigine®) is primarily recognized for its potential to enhance nitric oxide production, thereby supporting vasodilation and improved blood flow. The mechanism by which this occurs involves the arginine component serving as a substrate for nitric oxide synthase, leading to increased nitric oxide—a potent vasodilator. Improved endothelial function and vascular relaxation are theorized to have beneficial effects on blood pressure regulation.
However, the scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of inositol-stabilized arginine silicate for the management or treatment of hypertension is limited. Most clinical studies have focused on its role in sports nutrition, cognitive function, and endothelial function in healthy adults, rather than in populations with diagnosed hypertension. For example, studies such as those by Kalman et al. (2015, 2016) demonstrated enhanced nitric oxide levels and improved vascular flexibility, but did not directly measure outcomes related to high blood pressure management. There are no large-scale, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) directly assessing the effect of this compound on hypertensive individuals.
In summary, while the mechanism of action is plausible and there is some early evidence for improved vascular function, there is insufficient direct clinical evidence to support its use as a treatment for hypertension. The current evidence base is weak (rating: 2/5), and its use for this purpose should be considered experimental pending further research.
