Black rice, also known as "forbidden rice," is rich in anthocyanins—pigments with potent antioxidant properties. There is some scientific evidence suggesting that black rice and its extracts may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, including support for hypertension (high blood pressure). A limited number of animal and in vitro studies have demonstrated that anthocyanins from black rice can help reduce blood pressure by improving endothelial function, reducing oxidative stress, and modulating inflammatory pathways. For example, a 2016 study in hypertensive rats indicated that black rice extract could lower systolic blood pressure, likely due to its high antioxidant content. Additionally, anthocyanins in black rice have been shown to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which plays a role in blood pressure regulation.
However, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Most available studies are preclinical, and human trials directly assessing the effect of black rice consumption on blood pressure are scarce. While the biological plausibility is supported by its phytochemical profile and animal research, the direct translation to human hypertension management remains unproven. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is limited, and black rice cannot currently be recommended as a primary treatment for hypertension based on existing data.
