Bean pod (the dried pod of Phaseolus vulgaris, or common bean) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, for supporting kidney health, diabetes management, and as a mild diuretic. Its use in hypertension primarily stems from its role as a diuretic, as increased urine output can help lower blood pressure. However, this application is based on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific evidence. There are only limited and low-quality studies investigating the antihypertensive effects of bean pod extracts. Most references in herbal medicine texts cite its folk use rather than clinical trials. Major pharmacological reviews and systematic analyses do not include bean pod as an evidence-based intervention for hypertension. Thus, while bean pod has been traditionally used as a mild diuretic which, by extension, could support blood pressure reduction, there is minimal scientific validation for this use.
