Evidence supporting the use of: Broussonetia
For the health condition: Hot Flashes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Broussonetia, particularly Broussonetia papyrifera (paper mulberry), has a history of use in traditional East Asian medicine. In Chinese and Korean traditional medicine, extracts from its bark, root, and fruit have been used for various ailments, including those related to women’s health. Hot flashes, typically associated with menopause, are sometimes addressed in traditional herbal formulations, and Broussonetia may be included as a component in multi-herb remedies targeting symptoms like irritability, sweating, and temperature dysregulation. However, the specific use of Broussonetia alone for hot flashes is not strongly documented; its presence is more as a part of complex formulas designed to balance hormonal or yin-yang disturbances thought to underlie menopausal symptoms. Scientific validation for Broussonetia’s efficacy in treating hot flashes is lacking. A few in vitro studies have investigated phytoestrogenic or antioxidant properties of Broussonetia compounds, but there are no robust clinical trials or animal studies directly linking Broussonetia to relief of hot flashes. Therefore, its use for this condition is primarily justified by tradition, with weak supporting evidence.
