Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Wheatgrass has been traditionally used in various cultures as a general health tonic, valued for its high chlorophyll, vitamin, and mineral content. Its application for liver health, including hepatitis, is mainly rooted in traditional and naturopathic practices, rather than strong scientific validation. Proponents suggest that wheatgrass may help detoxify the liver, improve blood health, and enhance immune function, which are considered beneficial in chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis. However, scientific research specifically examining wheatgrass for hepatitis is extremely limited. There are small studies and anecdotal reports suggesting potential benefits for general liver support, but these are not robust or hepatitis-specific. Most clinical evidence for wheatgrass relates to its use in conditions like thalassemia or as an adjunct in ulcerative colitis, not viral hepatitis. No high-quality, large-scale clinical trials have assessed its efficacy or safety in treating or supporting hepatitis. Thus, while wheatgrass continues to be used in traditional and alternative medicine circles for liver conditions, its use for hepatitis is not substantiated by strong scientific evidence.
