Evidence supporting the use of: Triterpene Saponin
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Triterpene saponins, a class of naturally occurring glycosides found in many medicinal plants (such as Glycyrrhiza glabra, or licorice), have been investigated for their hepatoprotective effects, including potential benefits in hepatitis. Several laboratory studies and some clinical trials, most notably those involving glycyrrhizin (a triterpene saponin from licorice), have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antiviral activities. Glycyrrhizin-based preparations have been used in Japan for chronic hepatitis, and some clinical data suggest improvements in liver enzyme levels and histological markers in hepatitis patients. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of viral replication, antioxidant effects, and modulation of immune responses.
However, while there is scientific interest and some positive results, the overall quality of the evidence is moderate at best. Most studies are small, have methodological limitations, or are preclinical. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest a possible benefit but also note the need for larger, well-designed clinical trials to confirm efficacy and safety. Thus, while triterpene saponins—particularly glycyrrhizin—are justified by some scientific evidence for supportive treatment in hepatitis, the evidence is not robust or conclusive, justifying a moderate rating.
