Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tremella, most commonly referring to Tremella fuciformis (snow fungus), has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is traditionally believed to nourish the lungs, improve skin health, and enhance immune function. In the context of hepatitis, TCM practitioners have used Tremella as a tonic to support liver health and overall vitality. The rationale is based on its perceived ability to "moisten" and support the body’s vital energy (qi), rather than any direct antiviral or hepatoprotective effects.

Regarding scientific evidence, there are limited laboratory studies suggesting that Tremella polysaccharides may have antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties. Some animal and in vitro studies indicate potential liver-protective effects, but these findings are preliminary and not specific to hepatitis viruses or clinical hepatitis in humans. There are no robust clinical trials demonstrating efficacy of Tremella in treating hepatitis. Thus, its use for hepatitis is justified primarily by traditional knowledge, with only modest preclinical support and no strong clinical validation.
