Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes) have a long history of use in East Asian traditional medicine, including traditional Chinese and Japanese systems, for supporting liver health and treating hepatitis. The use is primarily based on the historical consumption of Shiitake for general vitality, immune support, and its believed ability to "clear heat" and "detoxify" the body, which are concepts tied to liver health in traditional medicine. Some modern interest has focused on compounds found in Shiitake, such as lentinan (a beta-glucan polysaccharide), which has demonstrated immunomodulatory and potential antiviral properties in laboratory settings.

However, direct scientific validation for Shiitake's efficacy in treating hepatitis specifically is limited. A few small studies and animal experiments have examined Shiitake extracts for their effects on liver function or viral replication, but robust clinical trials in hepatitis patients are lacking. Most of the available evidence comes from traditional use and preliminary research rather than well-established scientific findings. Therefore, while Shiitake continues to be used in some traditional contexts for liver support, the overall evidence supporting its role in hepatitis management remains weak.
