Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oroxylum indicum (commonly known as Indian trumpet tree or Shyonaka) has a longstanding place in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda, where it is one of the ten roots of the classical formulation 'Dashamoola.' In Ayurveda, Oroxylum indicum bark, root, and leaves are used for their purported hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) effects and for treating conditions described as "liver disorders," which may include symptoms analogous to hepatitis. The plant is believed to balance the body's doshas and is used for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its use in formulations for jaundice, liver enlargement, and general liver health.

Scientifically, there is limited but suggestive evidence from preclinical studies. Some in vitro and animal studies have reported that extracts of Oroxylum indicum can reduce chemically-induced liver damage, possibly due to its flavonoids (like baicalein and chrysin), which exhibit antioxidant activity. However, robust clinical trials in humans with hepatitis are lacking, and there is no conclusive scientific validation for its use specifically in hepatitis. Thus, while traditional usage is well documented, scientific evidence remains preliminary.
