Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Orchid trees, particularly species from the genus Bauhinia (such as Bauhinia variegata), have a longstanding place in traditional medicine systems of South Asia and Southeast Asia. In Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, various parts of the orchid tree (bark, leaves, flowers) have been used for their purported hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Preparations from these plants are traditionally prescribed to support liver health and manage symptoms associated with hepatitis, jaundice, and other hepatic conditions. However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited and mostly preclinical. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that extracts from Bauhinia species can reduce liver enzyme levels, scavenge free radicals, and protect against chemically induced liver injury in animal models. Nonetheless, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the active compounds responsible for these effects are not well-characterized. Therefore, while the use of orchid tree for hepatitis is rooted in traditional practice, there is insufficient scientific validation to strongly support its efficacy for this condition.
