Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oldenlandia, particularly the species Oldenlandia diffusa (also known as Hedyotis diffusa), is well-known in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other Asian traditional medical systems. It has been used historically as a "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" herb. In TCM, it is often included in herbal formulas prescribed for various liver ailments, including hepatitis, based on the belief that it can help to "cool the blood" and reduce inflammation or infection in the liver. This traditional use is documented in historical materia medica texts and continues to be referenced in contemporary TCM practice.

However, modern scientific validation specifically for hepatitis is limited. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Oldenlandia diffusa possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and even antiviral properties, direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy in treating hepatitis in humans is sparse or inconclusive. Most available studies are preclinical, and there are no large, high-quality randomized controlled trials confirming its benefit in hepatitis patients. Therefore, while its use is well-rooted in tradition, the scientific evidence remains preliminary, and its efficacy for hepatitis is not firmly established by modern research.
