Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Nymphaea nouchali (commonly known as blue lotus or star lotus) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine systems, particularly in South Asia. It has been employed for a variety of ailments, including liver disorders such as hepatitis, in Ayurveda and some forms of folk medicine. Traditional healers have used extracts from its flowers, seeds, and rhizomes for their purported hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) effects, often administered as decoctions or powders.

The rationale behind its use in hepatitis is largely based on the general principle of using plants with perceived detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties to support liver health. Some ethnobotanical surveys and historical texts mention its use for jaundice or liver inflammation, conditions often associated with hepatitis.

However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. While there are a few in vitro and animal studies indicating that extracts of Nymphaea nouchali may have antioxidant or mild hepatoprotective effects, direct evidence for efficacy in viral or toxic hepatitis in humans is lacking. No clinical trials have been published to support its use in hepatitis specifically. Thus, the justification for its use in hepatitis is primarily traditional, with a low level of evidence and no robust scientific confirmation.
