Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Liquid liver fractions, also known as liver extracts, have been used historically in various traditional medicine practices to support liver health, including in cases of hepatitis. The rationale for their use stems from the belief that organotherapy—using animal organ extracts to support the function of human organs—can provide nutritional and trophic factors that benefit the corresponding human organ. In the early to mid-20th century, liver extracts were used for anemia due to their high content of vitamin B12 and other nutrients, and this practice expanded to include claims of liver support and regeneration, particularly in chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis. However, the evidence for the efficacy of liver extracts specifically in treating hepatitis is limited to anecdotal reports and historical use; well-designed clinical trials are lacking. Modern hepatology does not recognize liquid liver fractions as a validated or recommended therapy for hepatitis of any etiology. Most contemporary guidelines focus on antiviral therapy, immunosuppression, or supportive care depending on the type and severity of hepatitis. While liver fractions may provide certain nutrients, there is no scientific consensus or robust clinical evidence that they directly impact viral replication, inflammation, or liver regeneration in hepatitis patients. Thus, their use persists mainly due to tradition rather than scientific validation.
