Evidence supporting the use of: Ligustrum Fruit
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ligustrum fruit (Ligustrum lucidum), also known as "Nu Zhen Zi" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is primarily justified for hepatitis support by its long-standing traditional use rather than robust scientific validation. In TCM, Ligustrum fruit is used to "nourish the liver and kidneys," and it is often included in herbal formulas to address symptoms associated with liver disorders, including hepatitis. Historical texts and TCM practitioners have recommended Ligustrum fruit to help with fatigue, dizziness, and other symptoms attributed to liver deficiency or damage.
The scientific evidence supporting its use for hepatitis is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest Ligustrum lucidum extracts have hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically benefit liver health or protect liver cells from damage. For example, certain studies have shown it may help reduce markers of liver injury in chemically-induced hepatitis models in animals. However, there are no well-controlled human clinical trials directly evaluating Ligustrum fruit as a treatment or adjunct for hepatitis. The evidence is therefore considered weak and largely preclinical.
In summary, the use of Ligustrum fruit for hepatitis is rooted in traditional practice with only modest preclinical scientific support and no strong clinical validation. Its role in hepatitis management should be considered as complementary and approached with caution, particularly in the absence of robust human evidence.
