Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Javanese Turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), also known as "temulawak," has a long history of traditional use in Indonesian and Southeast Asian herbal medicine, particularly for liver-related ailments, including hepatitis. In traditional Jamu (Indonesian herbal medicine), preparations of Javanese Turmeric are believed to have hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory properties and are commonly consumed to support liver health and assist in the management of hepatitis symptoms. Scientific research investigating the effects of Curcuma xanthorrhiza on hepatitis is limited and largely preclinical. Some laboratory and animal studies have indicated that extracts from this plant can exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and may protect liver cells from chemical-induced injury. The active compounds, primarily xanthorrhizol and curcuminoids, have shown potential in reducing markers of liver damage in experimental models. However, robust clinical trials in humans with hepatitis are lacking, and thus, scientific validation for its efficacy in this context remains weak. Overall, while the use of Javanese Turmeric to support hepatitis is well-rooted in traditional medicine, current scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is preliminary and insufficient for strong clinical recommendations.
