Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bupleurum is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb commonly used in formulas for liver health, including support for hepatitis. Its use for hepatitis is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where Bupleurum is believed to "soothe the liver" and "harmonize" the body's internal systems. The most well-known TCM formula containing Bupleurum is Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), which has been prescribed for centuries for various liver and digestive disorders, including symptoms associated with hepatitis.

Scientific research on Bupleurum's effects remains limited and largely based on preclinical (animal or in vitro) studies. Some laboratory studies suggest Bupleurum extracts and its constituents (notably saikosaponins) may have anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and hepatoprotective properties. Animal models show some promise in reducing liver inflammation and protecting liver cells from injury. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and there is insufficient high-quality evidence to support its efficacy or safety for hepatitis in modern medical practice. Therefore, while Bupleurum's use for hepatitis is justified by tradition and some early scientific findings, it cannot yet be considered validated by rigorous scientific research.

In summary, Bupleurum is used to support hepatitis primarily due to traditional practices and limited preliminary scientific data, but strong clinical evidence is still needed.
