Rating (out of 5): 1

The blackboard tree (Alstonia scholaris) is traditionally used in various systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for a range of ailments. In some regions of South and Southeast Asia, decoctions or extracts from the bark or leaves have been employed as remedies for liver problems, including hepatitis. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys indicate its use for "liver disorders," "jaundice," and other symptoms that may overlap with hepatitis. The rationale often centers on the plant’s perceived detoxifying and antipyretic properties. However, the direct application for hepatitis is based primarily on local traditional knowledge rather than rigorous scientific study.

Scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Alstonia scholaris for hepatitis is minimal. While some preliminary studies have investigated the plant’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties in vitro or in animal models, these studies are not sufficient to confirm its clinical effectiveness in human hepatitis. No large-scale, randomized clinical trials have established its safety or efficacy specifically for hepatitis in humans. Thus, while traditional use exists, the strength of scientific validation is currently weak, and further research is needed to substantiate any claims regarding its benefit for hepatitis.
