Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Basidiomycota, a large phylum of fungi that includes medicinal mushrooms such as Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), Lentinula edodes (Shiitake), and Trametes versicolor (Turkey Tail), has been investigated for potential benefits in liver health, including support for hepatitis. Several Basidiomycota species have been used in traditional medicine systems, but there is also some scientific research examining their effects on hepatitis, particularly hepatitis B and C. Studies have focused on their polysaccharide and triterpenoid compounds, which appear to have immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective effects. For instance, extracts from Ganoderma lucidum have shown in vitro and animal model activity in reducing hepatic inflammation and modulating immune responses. Some small-scale clinical studies suggest possible improvements in liver function markers among hepatitis patients, but these studies are limited by small sample sizes and methodological weaknesses. Overall, while there is preliminary scientific evidence supporting the potential of Basidiomycota-derived extracts in managing hepatitis, especially as adjuncts to conventional therapy, robust clinical trials are lacking. Thus, the evidence is rated as 2/5 — promising but inconclusive, with more rigorous research needed to establish efficacy and safety.
