Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Atractylone is a sesquiterpene compound found in the rhizome of Atractylodes species, which are commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The use of Atractylodes for treating liver disorders, including hepatitis, is primarily rooted in traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. In TCM, formulations containing Atractylodes are believed to strengthen the spleen and dispel dampness, concepts associated with digestive and metabolic health, which are thought to indirectly support liver function and recovery from hepatitis.

Some preclinical studies have investigated atractylone for its pharmacological effects, such as anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and antioxidant properties. Limited in vitro and animal studies suggest that atractylone and extracts of Atractylodes may attenuate liver injury by reducing liver enzymes and inflammatory markers. However, these studies are preliminary, and there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating atractylone’s efficacy for hepatitis.

Overall, the evidence supporting atractylone’s use in hepatitis is based largely on traditional use and low-level scientific data. While there are some promising findings from laboratory studies, there is insufficient clinical evidence to warrant a strong recommendation for its use in hepatitis. Thus, its application for this condition is better characterized as traditional rather than scientifically validated.
