Evidence supporting the use of: Astragaloside
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Astragaloside, particularly Astragaloside IV, is a major active component of Astragalus membranaceus, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Its use in the context of hepatitis primarily stems from recent scientific investigations, rather than long-standing traditional use of the isolated compound. Several preclinical studies have explored the hepatoprotective effects of Astragaloside IV, mainly in animal models and cell cultures. These studies indicate that Astragaloside IV can reduce liver inflammation, inhibit oxidative stress, and protect hepatocytes from injury induced by hepatitis viruses or toxicants.
For example, studies published in journals such as Phytotherapy Research (2012) and International Immunopharmacology (2017) demonstrated that Astragaloside IV attenuated liver inflammation and fibrosis in animal models of hepatitis through modulation of cytokine production and inhibition of pro-inflammatory pathways (e.g., NF-κB). Some data also suggest antiviral effects against hepatitis B virus in vitro.
However, clinical evidence in humans is minimal. Most research has been limited to animal or cellular experiments, and no large-scale randomized controlled trials have verified its efficacy or safety for hepatitis patients. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and some supportive preclinical evidence, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is still limited, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5.
