Andrographolide, a bioactive compound isolated from the plant Andrographis paniculata, has been studied for its potential hepatoprotective effects, including its use in supporting or treating hepatitis. Several preclinical studies (in vitro and in vivo) have demonstrated that andrographolide exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. These effects are believed to be beneficial in mitigating liver injury and inflammation associated with hepatitis.

Specifically, andrographolide has been shown in animal models to reduce markers of liver damage (such as ALT and AST), decrease liver fibrosis, and modulate immune responses. Some studies have also suggested antiviral activity against hepatitis B virus (HBV), with mechanisms involving inhibition of viral replication and modulation of immune response. However, the bulk of the evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies rather than large, well-controlled human clinical trials.

Limited clinical studies in humans have suggested that Andrographis paniculata preparations may help improve liver function parameters in patients with hepatitis, but these studies are generally small and of variable quality. While the scientific rationale for andrographolide’s use in hepatitis is supported by preclinical data, the clinical evidence in humans remains insufficient for strong recommendations. Thus, while there is scientific basis for interest and ongoing research, the current level of evidence supporting its use in hepatitis is moderate but not definitive.
