Evidence supporting the use of: Andrographis paniculata
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Andrographis paniculata, also known as "King of Bitters," has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Southeast Asian herbal practices. Traditionally, it has been used to treat a variety of liver disorders, including hepatitis. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its use for jaundice, liver inflammation, and general liver health. The purported benefits are attributed to its main bioactive compounds, particularly andrographolide, which is believed to have anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties.
From a scientific perspective, there are some animal studies and limited in vitro research suggesting that Andrographis paniculata extracts may reduce liver enzyme levels and offer some protection against chemically induced liver injury. However, robust clinical trials in humans with hepatitis are lacking. No large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials have confirmed its efficacy for treating hepatitis in humans. As such, its use for hepatitis remains primarily supported by traditional and historical use rather than strong modern clinical evidence.
In summary, while Andrographis paniculata has traditional backing for liver-related conditions, including hepatitis, the scientific evidence to date is limited and not sufficient to conclusively validate its use for this specific condition.
