Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG) is an intermediate in the Krebs cycle and plays a key role in cellular energy metabolism and amino acid synthesis. Its use in liver diseases, including hepatitis, has some scientific basis but is not strongly established. AKG has been investigated for its potential hepatoprotective effects, largely due to its involvement in detoxification of ammonia and its antioxidative properties. Small studies and preclinical research suggest that AKG supplementation may help reduce ammonia toxicity and support liver function, particularly in the context of hepatic encephalopathy or compromised nitrogen metabolism, which can be associated with hepatitis. For example, animal models have demonstrated that AKG can help reduce markers of liver injury and improve antioxidant defenses. A few clinical trials in humans, often mixed with other amino acids or compounds, have examined its role in improving liver function parameters, but these are limited in number and quality. There is insufficient large-scale, high-quality clinical evidence to support widespread use of AKG specifically for hepatitis treatment or support, and it is not a standard therapy in clinical guidelines. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence, the support is modest and not definitive.
