Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aloe macroclada is a species of aloe native to Madagascar and is traditionally used in Malagasy ethnomedicine for a variety of ailments, including hepatitis. The traditional use is primarily based on its local reputation for treating liver disorders and jaundice-like symptoms, as recorded in several ethnobotanical surveys. For example, Malagasy healers commonly prepare decoctions from the leaves of Aloe macroclada for oral administration to patients with symptoms suggestive of hepatitis or liver dysfunction. However, direct scientific studies evaluating the efficacy or safety of Aloe macroclada specifically for hepatitis are lacking. There are no clinical trials, and only limited phytochemical analyses exist for this species, which have shown the presence of anthraquinones and other compounds common to aloes known for their anti-inflammatory and potential hepatoprotective activities. Despite this, the evidence remains largely anecdotal and rooted in traditional practice rather than validated through rigorous scientific methods. Therefore, while Aloe macroclada is indeed used traditionally for hepatitis in Madagascar, there is insufficient scientific validation to support its efficacy, and the reliability of its traditional use is not yet established by modern pharmacological research.
