Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Albizia species, particularly Albizia lebbeck and Albizia julibrissin, have a longstanding role in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, various parts of the Albizia tree (bark, flowers, leaves) are used for a range of ailments, including liver-related conditions. Specifically, Albizia bark and preparations are sometimes used as adjuncts in the management of jaundice and other hepatic disorders, which are often associated with hepatitis. The rationale for their use is primarily based on their purported "detoxifying" and anti-inflammatory properties as described in traditional texts. Scientific evidence to support these uses is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest Albizia extracts may possess hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. However, these studies rarely focus on hepatitis specifically, and clinical trials in humans are lacking. There is insufficient direct evidence that Albizia species treat or significantly support recovery from hepatitis. Thus, while the use of Albizia for hepatitis is rooted in tradition, modern scientific validation is minimal, and it should not be relied upon as a primary therapy for hepatitis in the absence of stronger evidence.
