Wogonin is a flavonoid compound primarily isolated from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis (commonly known as Chinese skullcap). Its use in supporting the hepatic (liver) system has garnered growing scientific interest, though it has also been present in traditional Chinese medicine formulas for liver-related conditions. Preclinical studies, particularly in vitro and in vivo animal models, demonstrate that wogonin possesses hepatoprotective effects. These effects include reducing liver inflammation, inhibiting oxidative stress, and protecting liver cells from damage induced by toxins such as carbon tetrachloride and acetaminophen. Mechanistically, wogonin appears to modulate signaling pathways related to inflammation (e.g., NF-κB), apoptosis, and antioxidant defenses (e.g., Nrf2 pathway). Some studies also suggest antifibrotic properties, potentially beneficial for chronic liver disease.

However, human clinical evidence remains limited. Most available data are from animal studies or cell culture experiments, with only a handful of small-scale clinical trials investigating related extracts rather than isolated wogonin. While the preclinical findings are promising and provide a rationale for its potential use in liver health, the lack of robust, large-scale human studies means the evidence does not yet reach the highest levels of scientific validation. Therefore, the evidence for wogonin's support of the hepatic system can be considered moderate based on current research.
