Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Taurocholic acid is a bile acid naturally produced in the liver from cholic acid and taurine. It plays a key role in the hepatic (liver) system primarily by aiding in the emulsification and absorption of dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine. In clinical and experimental settings, taurocholic acid and other bile acids are used to study bile acid metabolism, liver function, and enterohepatic circulation. There is scientific evidence that taurocholic acid is essential for normal digestion and hepatobiliary physiology. Additionally, disturbances in taurocholic acid metabolism are linked to liver diseases such as cholestasis and cirrhosis.

However, direct supplementation of taurocholic acid as a therapy for liver diseases is not a common clinical practice. Most evidence focuses on its physiological role and alterations in liver disease states, rather than on therapeutic supplementation. Some research indicates that manipulation of bile acid composition (including taurocholic acid) may influence liver regeneration and protection, but these findings are primarily preclinical. In summary, while taurocholic acid is scientifically validated as crucial for liver function, robust evidence for its use as a supplement to support the hepatic system in humans is limited. The rating reflects strong scientific understanding of its role but limited direct clinical application as a supplement.
