Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Silydianin is one of the main flavonolignans found in the extract of Silybum marianum (milk thistle), along with silybin and silychristin. Milk thistle extracts have a long history of traditional use for liver disorders, but modern research has focused on their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties. While most studies on milk thistle use the standardized extract silymarin (which is a mixture of flavonolignans), there is some scientific evidence that silydianin specifically may contribute to the hepatoprotective effects. Preclinical studies have shown that silydianin can inhibit hepatic lipid peroxidation and reduce liver enzyme levels in models of chemically induced liver damage. However, there are few clinical studies evaluating silydianin alone; most human data come from trials using whole silymarin extracts. Meta-analyses of silymarin suggest mild benefit in improving liver function tests and symptoms in chronic liver disease, although results are somewhat inconsistent. Overall, the use of silydianin for hepatic support is justified by both traditional and emerging scientific evidence, but the direct evidence for silydianin as a single compound is moderate and primarily extrapolated from studies on milk thistle extracts as a whole.
