Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Phospholipids, particularly phosphatidylcholine (PC), have a well-established scientific basis for supporting the hepatic (liver) system. Phospholipids are fundamental components of cell membranes, including hepatocyte (liver cell) membranes. Scientific studies have investigated the use of phospholipids—especially in the form of "essential phospholipids" derived from soybeans—as supportive therapy for various liver conditions, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease, and drug-induced liver injury.

Several clinical trials and reviews suggest that phospholipid supplementation can help stabilize cell membranes, promote liver cell regeneration, and reduce liver inflammation. The best-documented compound is polyenylphosphatidylcholine (PPC), which has been shown in randomized controlled trials to improve liver function tests and histological liver parameters in patients with chronic liver diseases. The proposed mechanisms include improving membrane fluidity, antioxidant effects, and modulation of lipid metabolism.

While phospholipids are not a primary treatment for liver disease, their use as an adjunctive therapy is supported by clinical evidence and included in some clinical guidelines, especially in parts of Europe. The evidence is not uniformly strong across all liver conditions, and some studies have shown limited or no effect, but the overall body of scientific literature justifies their use as a supportive measure for the hepatic system.
