Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ox bile has been used traditionally in various medicinal systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and older Western pharmacopeias, to aid digestion and support liver and gallbladder function. The rationale stems from the empirical observation that bile from animals like oxen contains bile acids, which are critical for emulsifying fats and facilitating their absorption in the digestive tract—functions closely linked to the liver and gallbladder (components of the hepatic system). In historical texts, ox bile was also used for treating jaundice and other symptoms believed to be caused by "liver dysfunction."

However, modern scientific evidence supporting the use of ox bile specifically for direct hepatic system support in humans is limited. Most available research focuses on the use of bile acids or bile salts (some of which may be derived from ox bile) as a treatment for specific digestive disorders, such as bile acid insufficiency or certain types of malabsorption, rather than for general liver health or hepatic support. Thus, while there is a traditional basis for using ox bile in this context, robust clinical trials validating its efficacy for hepatic system support are lacking.
