Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

L-ornithine is an amino acid that plays a central role in the urea cycle, a process that primarily occurs in the liver and is responsible for the detoxification of ammonia, a byproduct of protein metabolism. The hepatic system, particularly in cases of liver dysfunction such as hepatic encephalopathy, can be compromised in its ability to process ammonia efficiently. Scientific studies have investigated the use of L-ornithine, often in combination with L-aspartate (LOLA), for its ability to promote ammonia detoxification and support liver function in patients with liver disease. Clinical trials have shown that L-ornithine supplementation can lower blood ammonia levels and improve cognitive function in patients with mild to moderate hepatic encephalopathy. The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) includes LOLA as a treatment option in its guidelines for hepatic encephalopathy. However, the evidence is mainly limited to populations with compromised liver function, and there is less data supporting its use in healthy individuals or for general "liver support." Thus, while there is scientific validation for its use in specific hepatic conditions, the strength of evidence for broad hepatic system support is moderate.
