Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Hu Zhang, also known as Polygonum cuspidatum or Japanese Knotweed, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for supporting the hepatic (liver) system. In TCM, Hu Zhang is believed to "clear heat," "remove toxins," and promote blood circulation, which are considered beneficial actions for maintaining liver health and addressing conditions such as jaundice and hepatitis. Texts like the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and various classical herbal compendiums list Hu Zhang as an herb used for liver-related ailments.

Although Hu Zhang contains resveratrol and other polyphenols known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, scientific evidence specifically supporting its benefits for liver health in humans is limited. Some preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) suggest protective effects against liver injury and oxidative stress, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while its traditional use for hepatic support is well established, modern scientific validation remains incomplete.

In summary, Hu Zhang’s use for hepatic system support is primarily based on traditional practices with moderate preclinical evidence, but it has not yet achieved strong scientific endorsement through human clinical studies.
