Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 3

Gypenoside, a group of saponins primarily extracted from Gynostemma pentaphyllum (commonly known as Jiaogulan), has been investigated for its potential hepatoprotective effects. Several preclinical studies in animals and in vitro models have indicated that gypenosides may help protect liver cells from damage caused by toxins, oxidative stress, and inflammation. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant activity, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and modulation of inflammatory pathways (such as downregulation of TNF-α and suppression of hepatic stellate cell activation). Some studies have also reported improvement in liver enzyme profiles and histological markers of liver injury in animal models of hepatic fibrosis and chemical-induced liver damage.

Despite these promising results, robust clinical evidence in humans remains limited. While some small-scale clinical trials and observational reports suggest possible benefits in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or chronic hepatitis, the quality and size of these studies are not sufficient to draw definitive conclusions. As such, gypenoside’s use for liver health is supported by a moderate level of preclinical scientific evidence, but more well-designed human trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in supporting hepatic function.
